Thalam Treatment in Haripad
Talam · തളം
Duration: 30-45 minutes
What is Thalam?
Thalam is a soothing Ayurvedic procedure where a specially prepared medicated herbal paste is applied to the crown of the head (Brahmarandhra — the fontanelle area). This region is considered a vital Marma point in Ayurveda, directly connected to the brain and nervous system. Thalam is a gentle yet effective treatment for mental and neurological conditions.
How It Works
The medicated paste — typically made from herbs like Rasnadi, Amalaki, and Jatamansi mixed with medicated oil or buttermilk — is applied as a thick layer on the crown of the head. The active herbal compounds are absorbed through the scalp's thin skin and act on the underlying neural structures. The cooling or balancing properties of the herbs calm the nervous system and reduce excess heat (Pitta) in the head region.

What to Expect
The session lasts 30–45 minutes. You will be seated comfortably. The physician prepares the herbal paste fresh for your specific condition. The paste is applied as a thick layer on the crown of your head and kept in place for the prescribed duration. During this time, you can relax quietly. The paste is then gently removed and the area is cleaned. Many patients report an immediate sense of calm and mental clarity.
Overview
Clinical Context
Thalam is a localised application of medicinal paste retained on the crown of the head (the Brahmarandhra region) for 30–45 minutes. The paste — typically prepared from Rasnadi choornam, Eladi powder, or specific classical formulations mixed with herbal oils or buttermilk — is held in place by a thin dough barrier. Thalam works on the head's deeper centres through sustained local absorption. It is most commonly prescribed for chronic insomnia, severe stress-induced headaches, mental fatigue, age-related cognitive changes, and as a complementary therapy in larger Panchakarma courses for psychiatric or neurological conditions. It is gentler and less time-intensive than Shirodhara, making it suitable for patients who cannot lie still under a continuous stream for 45 minutes.
How It Works
Procedure
- 01
Paste and dough preparation
The selected herbal powder is mixed with appropriate oil or liquid (Ksheerabala for cooling, Mahanarayana for warming) into a smooth paste. A black gram dough ring is shaped for the crown of the head to hold the paste in place.
- 02
Scalp preparation
Hair at the crown is parted to expose the scalp. A short, gentle scalp massage with a thin layer of the same oil prepares the area. The dough ring is placed and sealed against the scalp.
- 03
Paste retention
Warm paste is filled into the dough basin to a depth of 1–2 cm and left for 30–45 minutes. The patient remains in a comfortable seated or supine position; some patients fall asleep during this phase.
- 04
Removal and finishing
The dough is removed, paste is wiped away with warm cloth (oil residue is left on the scalp for absorption), and a brief final scalp massage closes the session. The patient rests for 15–20 minutes.

What to Expect
- Duration
- 45–60 minutes per session
- Frequency
- Daily for 7–14 days; sometimes alternate days in milder protocols
- During & After
- A cooling, settling sensation on the crown that often produces a sense of mental clarity. Patients with chronic insomnia frequently report better sleep from the first or second night. Stress-headache and mental-fatigue patients typically respond over the full course. Many patients combine Thalam with Shirodhara or Shiropichu in extended programmes.
- Contraindications
- Open scalp wounds, severe scalp infection, pregnancy in the first trimester, and acute febrile illness. Patients with very oily scalp may need adjusted paste composition; we screen for individual sensitivities during intake.
