Panchakarma
Nasyam Treatment in Haripad
Nasya · നസ്യം
Duration: 15-30 minutes
What is Nasyam?
Nasyam (Nasya) is one of the five Panchakarma procedures in Ayurveda. It involves the administration of medicated oils, herbal juices, or powders through the nasal passages. Ayurveda considers the nose as the gateway to the head (Shiro Dwara), and Nasyam is the primary treatment for diseases affecting the head, neck, and respiratory system.
How It Works
The nasal mucosa provides a direct pathway to the brain and the central nervous system. Medicated substances administered through the nose are quickly absorbed and reach the Shringataka Marma — a vital point where the channels serving the eyes, ears, nose, and throat converge. This allows the medicine to act on the head and neck regions effectively.
Benefits
- Clears nasal congestion and sinuses
- Improves breathing and respiratory function
- Relieves headaches and migraines
- Enhances mental clarity and concentration
- Strengthens sense organs (eyes, ears, nose)

What to Expect
The procedure begins with a gentle facial massage and steam application to the face and neck area. You will lie down with your head slightly tilted back. The physician administers the prescribed medicated oil or preparation drop by drop into each nostril. You will be asked to inhale gently. After administration, a light facial massage follows. The entire process takes 15–30 minutes. Mild watering of the eyes or a runny nose immediately after is normal.
Overview
Clinical Context
Nasyam is the systematic instillation of medicated oil, herbal ghee, or powders into the nasal passages — one of the five classical Panchakarma procedures. The nasal passages are considered the gateway to the head (Shiras), and Nasyam is the primary route to treat conditions above the shoulders: sinusitis, recurrent headaches, migraines, cervical spondylosis with cranial symptoms, allergic rhinitis, and a wide range of neurological and psychiatric presentations. At Vaidya Vrindavanam, Nasyam is rarely used in isolation; it forms the head-and-neck phase of larger Panchakarma protocols and is preceded by face Abhyangam and steam.
How It Works
Procedure
- 01
Pre-treatment Abhyangam
A focused massage of the face, scalp, neck, and shoulders with warm medicated oil (Anu tailam, Ksheerabala, or specific classical formulations) prepares the head-region channels. Steam to the face follows, opening the nasal passages.
- 02
Oil instillation
The patient lies supine with the head tilted slightly back. Warm medicated oil is instilled drop by drop into each nostril — the dose varies from 6 drops (Pratimarsha Nasyam, gentle) to 32 drops (Marsha Nasyam, deeper) per side, selected by the indication.
- 03
Retention and absorption
The patient remains supine for 10–15 minutes while the oil is gently inhaled and absorbed. Mild gargling and spitting of oil-saliva at intervals clears the throat; nothing is swallowed.
- 04
Post-procedure care
After clearing the residual oil, the patient is given warm water, advised to avoid cold drinks and exposure to wind for the rest of the day, and rests for 20–30 minutes. A light, warm meal follows.
